Arch Linux 2018.09.01 has arrived this week as the first snapshot to bump the kernel packages, the core of every Linux-based operating system, to the most recent and advanced Linux 4.18 kernel series.
Last month's ISO snapshot, Arch Linux 2018.08.01, still used the Linux 4.17.11 kernel because Linux kernel 4.18 hit the streets about two weeks later, on August 12, 2018.
But now that Linux kernel 4.17 has reached end of life, it was time for Arch Linux to get a shiny new kernel, and the latest ISO snapshot is powered by Linux kernel 4.18.5 out-of-the-box.
Linux kernel 4.18 brings more Spectre mitigations, this time for Spectre V1 and V2 on the 32-bit ARM architecture, as well as for Spectre Variant 4 on the ARM64 (AArch64) and ARMv8 architectures.
It also features a just-in-time compiler for eBPF programs on the 32-bit (x86) architecture and adds official support for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 ARM mobile processor.
Ready for new installations
Besides the Linux 4.18.5 kernel, the Arch Linux 2018.09.01 ISO snapshot also incorporates all the software updated and security fixes released via the main repositories throughout August 2018.
As usual with every new Arch Linux snapshot release, Arch Linux 2018.09.01 is ready only for new installations, for those who want to deploy the operating system on new computers.
This way, you won't have to download hundreds of updates from the repositories after installing the operating system. Using Arch Linux 2018.09.01 everything is already up-to-date.
Arch Linux follows a rolling release model, so existing users don't have to download a new ISO snapshot to update their installations, but only run the 'sudo pacman -Syu' command in a terminal app.
Without further ado, you can download Arch Linux 2018.09.01 right now from the official website or through our Linux software portal. The ISO can be written to a USB stick, burnt on a CD, or mounted directly.
Question: image for Raspberry pi Zero
Hello,
I have recently got a raspberry pi zero w, and I am having fun playing around with Rasbian. This is basically my first experience with Linux, so please be patient with me if my questions look stupid to you :)
I would like to try Arch-Linux on the rasp-zero-w. As a main laptop I a macOSX and this means I have problems using the install instructions here:
(I guess because ext4 is not supported, also fdisk doesn't work the same, I think)
QUESTION: Is there somewhere a .iso image which I can just flash to my SDD to get started? It would be great if this .iso was signed and/or downloadable somewhere 'official' :P
